Meropa Casino welcomes IT cadets to female-focused programme

Driving gender parity in the hospitality sector

In a move to improve gender parity in the Information Technology landscape, Meropa Casino & Entertainment World has welcomed six female cadets on a programme to assist them with international certification and experience.

With the IT industry growing globally, the women, who each hold an IT Diploma or Degree from Rosebank College, will receive training focused on A+, N+ and Microsoft Azure.

“This is a move which sees the Sun International hospitality and gaming destination paving the way for a future where gender diversity is the norm, not the exception, said Sammy Mokhele, General Manager of Meropa Casino.

The cadets will spend four months working towards achieving qualifications in A+, N+, and Cyber Security from Boston City Campus. The IT Cadets work regular office hours and receive a generous stipend from Meropa to support their journey, including a transport allowance, breakfast and lunch, as well as all IT-related equipment.

Technology industry research company BMIT said in its most recent South Africa IT Services Market Report that it predicted the country’s IT services market would reach R160-billion in total annual revenue by 2027.

“We are thrilled to allow this group of exceptional women to improve and hone their skills,” said Chancy Hlebeya, Meropa’s IT Manager. “This initiative is more than just a programme; it’s a movement to empower women and balance the seemingly male-dominated IT industry.”

The women will develop technical skills and gain the confidence and resilience to thrive in the dynamic IT field. “Our training programme is designed to equip them with knowledge and tools to excel, and we’re excited to see them flourish,” Lemos, Meropa’s HR Business Partner said. Those who pass their qualifications will achieve a certificate from Boston City Campus and be absorbed into Sun International if job openings arise.

“As an organisation, we will continue to support and celebrate the achievements of these remarkable women. Together, we can break down barriers, shatter stereotypes, and create a more inclusive and vibrant IT landscape,” said. Hlongwane
